Your looking for some outdoor furniture and the consensus opinion is that teak is the way to go. Researching just a little makes you wonder why teak is such an expensive type of wood.

Teak is one of the more expensive types of wood due to the current distribution practices of the wood. The majority of teak comes from Indonesia which closely manages how much teak can be harvested each year. Each tree that is used is replaced with a new tree on the teak plantation. The scarcity of new teak combined with its luxurious finished look and weatherproof properties make teak so valuable.

What is the Value of Teak?

The value of teak depends on the quality and the age of the wood. Teak that is older is more valuable and the more haeartwood with dense tight grain the more valuable it is.

If the wood was stained or painted at some point the value drops considerably because it seals the oils in the wood taking away  the natural protection.

What is the Best Teak in the World?

Teak from Burma is currently the best you can get . The teak from Thailand and Papua New Guinea was considered the highest quality. Thailand teak is now protected and logging is prohibited due to over harvesting during the last couple hundred of years.

Teak has a lot of natural rubber and oil in the grain of the wood. Teak retains these oils long after being chopped down and processed. Once the tree is dried during processing the oils weatherproof the wood.

Teak Color

Teak starts out honey brownish than , as it ages and gets weathered fades to a silvery gray.

The heartwood is identifiable by the distinctive golden brown color while the sapwood is usually more cream colored. Older trees have a lot less sapwood.
